Different versions of the NWT?

having noted in the last 3 days a romour of a new revisal of the nwt etc i thought i would see if i have all the nwts in my collection:.

1. christian greek scriptures.

4. job- song of solomon.

There were at least three editions of the Christian Greek Scriptures prior to 1952. There was a first edition of 1950, a Second Edition in 1950, and the Revised Edition of 1951.

In 1963 there was under one cover a compilation edition consisting of the 1951 Christian Greek Scriptures and the five Hebrew volumes, with revisions to some of the dates in the "Table of the Books of the Bible", and the exclusions of numerous maps and charts. Perhaps it also included other changes.

In 1985 there was a revision of the Kingdom Interlinear, incorporating the scripture text of the 1984 Christian Greek Scriptures, and having revisions to the Foreword of the earlier Kingdom Interlinear.

New York Times article on first release of NWT

i just discovered a clipping from an old new york times article on the release of the first nwt volume.

it was tucked inside a nwt volume i purchased on ebay.

i thought it interesting and made a pdf of it.

compound complex, I think the phrase 'New World" in the title of the translation, has to do with the WT expectation (in the 1950s) of the great nearness of a paradise Earth in which righteous predominates, during a 1,000 year period of Christ reigning. Think of the NT verses about 'a New Heavens and a New Earth'.

Olin Moyle's letter to Judge Rutherford

olin moyle was an attorney who was invited to bethel headquarters back in the 1930's to assist with legal cases at that time.

he became disillusioned with the culture at the headquarters and penned the following letter of resignation.

rutherford replied with an outrageous article in the watchtower provoking moyle to sue.

Hey blondie, earlier today (before I read your post) I also read the Questions from Readers segment in the WT 3/15/51 p.191 about religion. What an amazing coincidence! I came across it because I was looking for content in the 1950 and 1951 Watchtowers which might mention any pre-1951 NWT Edition changes to the original 1950 NWT Christian Greek Scriptures.

I notice that the 1950 and 1951 Christian Greek Scriptures have a cross reference to Luke 12:42. In both editions Luke 12:42 says "Who really is a faithful steward, a discreet one, whom his master will appoint over his body of attendants to keep giving them their measure of food supplies at the proper time?" Note that is says "a faithful" instead of 'the faithful". Perhaps objavitelj and the governing body member (Gerrit Lösch) have the pre-1961 NWT translation of Luke 12:42 crossed in their minds with that of Matthew 24:45. In contrast the NWT of 1961 (as as well as of 1970, 1971, 1981, and 1984) at Luke 12:42 says "the faithful steward, the discreet one".

The WT sometimes make changes in the wording of some of their publications, without stating that any changes were made. Such has been demonstrated. If darkspilver's and dropoffyourkeylee's copy of the First Edition is in fact not the first printing (or at least the original edition) of the First Edition, then it is possible that the first printing of the First Edition did not have 'the' in the verse at Matt 24:45.

I now have confirmation of the accuracy of the following which I said in my prior post. "But at one time I saw (and I think I once owned) a 1950 edition which did not have that content about 1 John 5:7, 8 in the Appendix. I thus think there were two 1950 editions." Note that by that I mean two editions (the latter being a minor revision of the original First Edition, and that that revision of the First Edition did not likely state itself as a revision) before the edition of 1950 which states itself as the "Second Edition". The confirmation is as follows.

The WT Library CD-ROM of 1999 says the following in the November 15, 1950 issue of the WT in the section called "Addenda On 1 John 5:7, 8".

Since release of the New World Translation on August 2, 1950, at the international assembly of Jehovah's witnesses at Yankee Stadium, New York city, there has been widely published religious criticism over its rendering of 1 John 5:7, 8. Therefore we append the following as a suitable footnote to those verses appearing on page 700:

1 John 5:7, 8: "For there are three witness bearers, the spirit and the water and the blood, and the three are in agreement."

This rendering is according to the Greek texts by Westcott and Hort (1881) and by D. Eberhard Nestle (18th edition of 1948) and by José María Bover, S.J. (1943) and by Augustinus Merk, S.J. (6th edition of 1948).

After "witness bearers" the cursive Manuscripts No. 61 (of 15th or 16th century) and No. 629 (in Latin and Greek, of 14th to 15th century) and Vg C.S add the words: "In heaven, the Father, the Word and the holy spirit; and these three are one. 8 And there are three witness bearers on earth." But these words are omitted by ... MSS. and the Latin New Testament according to the edition of St. Jerome, by Wordsworth and White, edition of 1911.'

dropoffyourkeylee, does your copy of the First Edition include content about 1 John 5:7, 8 on page 786? If it does then it is not the original edition of the First Edition, but an revision/edit of it (in which your copy does not declare itself to be a revision/edit).

Isn’t JW’s teaching of “the abomination that causes desolation” wrong?

what “the abomination that causes desolation” mentioned in mathew 24:15 means could be understood only by close followers of jesus because it was part of his personal discussion with them.

by stopping to greet those whom they consider as “their enemies” jws are identifying themselves as “pagans,” according to jesus.

(mathew 5:43-48) thus they cannot correctly understand what the abomination that causes desolation” that would appear as part of signs of “last days.”.

I don't see how the expansion of NATO membership can be viewed as a "pushing" in a military sense, since that expansion is not a result of military conquest (despite NATO being a military alliance of countries). Instead it is a result of countries voluntarily joining NATO.

However Ukraine is clearly engaging in military pushing against Russia. For example, a news report says that Ukrainian forces managed to push back Vladimir Putin's invading army from the Ukrainian capital's outer edges.NATO is also engaging in pushing by supplying Ukraine with weapons to fight Russia, and by placing sanctions on Russia. But the expansion of NATO membership is not "pushing".

Abraham1, I don't think the WT thinks there will be a World War III between nations, since such a war would likely be a nuclear war which very likely would destroy all nations, and very likely all humans and virtually all kinds of life on planet Earth.

In other NT verses the forgiving of sins by Jesus is linked to Jesus healing people as a result. Verses 13 - 27 are about Jesus Jesus preaching and expelling demons, and about the apostles of Jesus obtaining the authority to expel demons.

Many religious people of the first century CE believed that having certain diseases and being demon possessed (being what people back then considered to be demon possessed) meant that the diseased (or evil spirit possessed) person must have committed a major sin. (For an example of this view, see John 9:2.) They believed that many diseases (and some cases even what were thought of as people becoming possessed by an evil or unclean spirit) were due to YHWH/God punishing people for their sins. They also believed that people committing certain kinds of sins would result in Satan possessing people (or in Satan sending a demon to possess people). As a result, people having such views believed that if God forgived (forgave) people of such underlying sins, then by means of God (and possibly through a human servant of god) the health problem and/or evil spirit possession would go away.

To me Mark 3:28, 29 is saying that Jewish worshipers of YHWH/God, and perhaps even all people, - except for those who blaspheme the holy spirit, can have their sins forgiven. Thus to me those verses are not saying that only the 144,000 (whether a literal or symbolic number of anointed ones of God) can have their sins forgiven. This idea (at least for those having faith in Jesus) is also expressed in John 3:16 - 17. However I think that according to Mark 3:13 - 30 Jesus and his fellow anointed ones (at least Jesus and his apostles) have authority to forgive sins and to heal people.

Verses 22 - 27 and 30 make the point that when one attributes an obvious work of the holy spirit (such as the expelling of demons) [according to the gospel of Mark], to Satan (Beelzebub) and says that the human being (whether Jesus or his apostles or his other disciples) used to expel the demons has an unclean spirit, then one is blaspheming the holy spirit.

In contrast no one of the governing body of the JWs, despite claiming to be of the anointed, claims to have the gift of the spirit (such as the power to perform exorcisms) or heal people's bodies by supernatural means). Furthermore there is no evidence at all of any of the WT's/JW's governing body members ever having gifts of the holy spirit. As a result, criticizing the governing body (even attributing evil to them), from a biblical standpoint does not amount to blaspheming the holy spirit.

The Watchtower, June 1, 1953 has an article called "Sharing in the Prosperity of God's People". It says in part the following.

"That Jehovah is indeed the source of prosperity is proved by the prosperity existing among his people today, as a result of which they are the happiest people in all the earth.

... Today, Christendom has no evidence of divine favor; it is perplexed and in extreme fear; it has no timely message for the people, and prays and crusades vainly for peace. But Jehovah's people are enjoying prosperity; God's sacred secrets are being unraveled to them; they have no uncertainty as to their purpose on earth; they have evidence of Jehovah's spirit and approval; they have courage; their number of ministers is constantly increasing and their table is filled with rich spiritual food.

... So let others see and hear us as Jehovah's witnesses; let them see our spiritual prosperity; let them feel an overwhelming desire to share it. There is plenty of prosperity for all-we can afford to be generous! Doing so our own happiness will increase as we see God's visible organization prosper more and more."

Are JWs really the happiest people on Earth? No! A number of them are being sexually abused by one of their JW parents. Many of them are under extreme stress by the religion and want to leave but can't do so without their JW family shunning them.

Are JWs now now enjoying prosperity? No. A high percentage of them besides having mental distress are also doing very poorly financially, as result of putting WT interests (in the name of kingdom interests) first. JWs are being fed some rotten filthy food by the governing body of the JWs, by way of the WT. Their critical thinking skills have been impaired by studying the literature of the WT, including that which is on JW.ORG.
